The leaves of many trees in the spring have a delicate look, lighter in hue and a more vibrant green than the summer canopy. They were especially so on this rainy day, providing a lovely background to the blossoms of the white dogwoods growing here.

I wish I could say that this was along a trail I was hiking, about five miles in, and along a pretty creek. But the truth is that I took this photo from the parking lot of a rest area along an interstate highway. I had just backed out of my parking space when I noticed this scene at the edge of the pavement. I pulled back into the parking space, got my camera out of the backpack I keep it in, and watched for traffic as I took the photo.

Sometimes the beauty of nature is in surprising places if we’re open to seeing it.
