As kids, we called them whirligigs and helicopters, but the botanically minded know them as samaras. The red maple tree (Acer rubrum) in my yard is full of them right now: winged seed pairs that dangle like earrings from slender ruby stalks called pedicels.

Every spring I pluck a few of these delicate beauties to admire up close. And last year, while under the influence of playful childhood memories and whirligig whimsy, a dreamy watercolor emerged.
