Fire and Water — Free

This is Free’s third album and the one that brought them to the world stage. This is also the first Free album I had and by far my favorite.

It’s hard-driving at times, soothing at others, and very compact all-around — a great English blues rock band.

There’s probably nobody out there who hasn’t heard “All Right Now,” a rock classic featured here. Andy Fraser plays a very distinctive bass, which I love, and he co-writes almost all the songs with frontman Paul Rodgers.

Rodgers later forms Bad Company and takes his fabulous voice and drummer Kirke with him.

Free recorded at least six studio albums from 1968 through 1973. I’ve had this one in my collection first as vinyl then as a CD. I still listen to it frequently.

A nice shot of Steve Winwood with the boys.
